On Tuesday, my long-time friend Erica contacted me and asked me to help her surprise her husband, Phil, with a birthday cake. I was absolutely elated to be able to play a part in making Phil's birthday celebration special. This was a particularly special request since Erica and I are not only friends but also sisters - dorm sisters from high-school, that is. We were study buddies and partners in crime in the Blauen dorm.
Erica told me that Phil loves chocolate. So, a chocolate cake was in order.
The cake is a 4 layered, 6 inch chocolate cake with vanilla bean filling and decorated with chocolate buttercream ruffles and vanilla buttercream accents and garnished with dark chocolate leaves.
Personally, I really like the shabby rustic style of ruffled ribbon. This piping technique lends itself perfectly to all sorts of other cake occasions like a baby shower (imagine in blue or pink with a bow!) or even a wedding cake in white and several layers with some flowers.
Delicious chocolate accent leaves from Germany. It not only looks good, but also tastes delicious. German chocolate is simply the best.
Vanilla buttercream accent border around the bottom of the cake.
Can you see the ruffles stacked up on top of each other?
Finally, the cake is done and ready for pick-up. Happy Birthday, Phil! I hope you were suprised, enjoyed the cake, felt really celebrated and that there was enough chocolate for you.
